Why the Governorship and State Assembly Election Were Postponed, According to INEC

 

The governorship election was delayed by one week for the reasons cited by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Originally set for this Saturday, the exercise will now happen on March 18.

This was verified in a statement released on Wednesday night by Barr. Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

Okoye said that the commission required more time to reconfigure the BVAS for the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

“For instance, the BVAS can only be activated on the specific date and time of an election.

“Having been used for the Presidential and National Assembly elections on 25th February 2023, it is necessary to reconfigure the BVAS for activation on the date of the governorship and State Assembly elections,” the statement read in part.
