The equitable distribution of government palliatives has recently become a topic of national debate in Nigeria. In response to growing concerns over political bias in the allocation of essential resources, Hon. Bala Salihu Dawakin Kudu, Director General of the Progressive Amalgamation of Northern Nigeria (PANN), has issued a call for more inclusive governance practices. The appeal underscores the need to ensure that palliatives, meant to alleviate economic hardships, are fairly distributed across all political affiliations.

Hon. Bala Salihu Dawakin Kudu made the announcement on Monday Aug 12, highlighting the urgency of addressing the current disparities in the distribution of palliatives across various states. The initiative comes in the wake of reports suggesting that palliatives have been disproportionately allocated to members of ruling parties, often at the expense of those aligned with opposition groups.
“The distribution of palliatives should transcend political affiliations,” Hon. Bala Dawakin kudu stated. “It is crucial that all Nigerians, regardless of their political leanings, have access to the support they need during these challenging times.”
Nigeria's diverse political landscape, with different states governed by various political parties, has led to concerns over the fairness of palliative distribution. In states where the ruling party holds power, such as the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna, there have been reports of opposition party members being sidelined in the allocation process. This trend has similarly been observed in states like Kano, where the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is in control.
This practice, according to Hon. Bala Dawakin kudu, not only undermines the principles of justice and equity but also risks deepening political divisions within the country. “Using government resources as tools for political patronage erodes public trust and exacerbates the challenges faced by vulnerable populations,” he warned.

To rectify these imbalances, Hon. Bala Dawakin kudu has proposed a more inclusive and transparent distribution system. This system would ensure that palliatives are allocated not only to members of the ruling party in each state but also to those from opposition parties. He suggested that the strength and presence of opposition parties in each state should be considered when distributing resources.
“For example, in Kaduna, where the APC is the ruling party, members of the PDP, as the second strongest party, should also benefit from the distribution. Similarly, in Kano, the APC should be included in the distribution process alongside the NNPP,” Hon. Bala Dawakin kudu explained.
He also called for the involvement of independent bodies, including civil society organizations and international observers, to oversee the distribution process. This, he believes, would help ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness.

The proposed measures are seen as vital steps toward fostering national unity and reducing political polarization.
