In an open letter to fellow Nigerians, Bala Salihu Dawakin Kudu, Director General of the Progressive Amalgamation of Northern Nigeria (PANN), emphasized the importance of recognizing the true power dynamics within the country's democratic government. Dawakin Kudu underscored that while the President holds significant authority, it is the National Assembly that plays a pivotal role in shaping the nation's policies.
Dawakin Kudu wrote:
Dear Fellow Nigerians,
"I write to you today as a concerned citizen, deeply aware of the challenges and hardships that many of us are currently enduring. It is crucial for us all to recognize the structure of our democratic government and understand where the true power to influence and shape our nation's policies resides.

"In recent times, much of the public discourse has centered on the decisions and actions of our President, His Excellency, Ahmed Bola Tinubu. While the Office of the President holds significant authority, it is critical for us to remember that in our constitutional democracy, the President does not wield absolute power.
"According to the Nigerian Constitution, the National Assembly, comprising the Senate and the House of Representatives, plays a pivotal role in the governance of our country. These elected representatives are vested with the constitutional authority to check and balance the powers of the Executive branch. They have the legal power to scrutinize, amend, approve, or reject policies and proposals put forth by the President."
He emphasized that the National Assembly has the power to stop any actions by the President that they believe are not in the best interest of the people. By directing concerns and demands to those with the constitutional mandate to act on their behalf, Nigerians can ensure that their representatives fulfill their duties with seriousness and integrity.

"Therefore, it is imperative that we, as a nation, acknowledge that our Senators and Representatives have a crucial responsibility in shaping the direction of our country. They are the ones who can constitutionally stop any actions by the President that they believe are not in the best interest of the people. They have the power to amend laws, block unfavorable policies, and hold the Executive accountable for decisions that may lead to hardships for the masses.
"Blaming the President alone for the current situation overlooks the fact that our elected lawmakers are equally responsible for representing our interests. It is their duty to stand up for their constituents and ensure that the government’s actions align with the will and welfare of the people."
In his speech, Dawakin Kudu urged Nigerians to engage with their Senators and Representatives, hold them accountable, and remind them of their immense power and responsibility.

Dawakin Kudu concluded that the true power to mitigate or stop policies that may cause hardship lies with legislative representatives.
